Deciding to start the Allurion programme is one thing. Knowing what you are actually signing up for — day by day, week by week — is another.
This guide walks through the full programme experience honestly: what placement involves, what the early weeks feel like, what the weight loss trajectory looks like, and what happens after the balloon passes. There are no surprises here by design.
Before the Programme Begins: Your Consultation
Before placement, you attend a free consultation with the Ottawa Health Center medical team. This is a clinical assessment, not a sales conversation.
Your medical history, BMI, and health profile are reviewed to confirm eligibility. The programme is discussed in full — including the dietary protocol, the support structure, realistic weight loss expectations, and what side effects to anticipate. Any questions you have are answered before a decision is made.
Patients with a BMI of 27 or above with weight-related health conditions, or a BMI of 30 or above, are generally eligible. Certain conditions — including severe GERD, previous gastric surgery, and some medications — may affect suitability and are assessed individually.
Placement Day
The placement appointment is outpatient and takes approximately 15 minutes. No fasting is required. No sedation is administered.
You swallow a small capsule containing the deflated balloon, attached to a thin, flexible catheter. A brief X-ray confirms that the capsule has reached the stomach. The balloon is then filled with approximately 550ml of fluid through the catheter. The catheter is removed, and the balloon remains in place.
Most patients describe the process as straightforward. Some feel mild discomfort during swallowing, which resolves quickly. You leave the clinic on the same day.
Weeks 1–2: The Adjustment Period
The first two weeks are the most physically demanding part of the programme. The stomach is adjusting to the presence of the balloon, and side effects are most pronounced in this period.
Common experiences include nausea, mild cramping, reduced appetite, and early satiety. Anti-nausea and antispasmodic medications are prescribed as standard for this phase. Most patients manage these symptoms at home and do not require any medical intervention beyond the prescribed medications.
Dietary intake during week one is liquid-based — broths, smoothies, protein shakes, and clear fluids. This protects the stomach and minimises nausea while the body adjusts. Week two transitions to soft foods: yoghurt, soft-cooked vegetables, eggs, fish, and similar options.
Practical advice for this phase:
- Eat slowly and stop at the first sign of fullness
- Remain upright for at least 30 minutes after eating
- Prioritise hydration — small, frequent sips rather than large volumes
- Avoid strong smells or foods that trigger nausea
- Rest when needed — fatigue is normal in the first week
By the end of week two, the majority of patients report that symptoms have eased significantly.
Weeks 3–8: The Core Weight Loss Phase
This is when the programme begins to feel like a sustainable process rather than an adjustment.
Side effects have largely resolved. The balloon’s physical effect — reduced stomach capacity and earlier satiety — becomes a working tool rather than a source of discomfort. Portion sizes are naturally smaller, and hunger between meals is typically reduced.
Solid foods are gradually reintroduced from week three. The dietary protocol at this stage focuses on nutrient-dense, balanced meals in smaller portions: lean protein, vegetables, wholegrains, and healthy fats. High-calorie, low-nutrient foods become harder to eat in meaningful quantities simply because there is less room.
Weight loss is typically most rapid during this phase. A combination of significantly reduced caloric intake, the balloon’s physical effect, and the body’s response to a sustained caloric deficit drives consistent results.
Light to moderate exercise is encouraged from this point. Physical activity accelerates weight loss, supports muscle retention, and builds the habits that sustain results after the programme ends. Your programme team will advise on appropriate activity levels based on your starting fitness and health profile.
Weeks 9–16: Consolidation and Habit Formation
The rate of weight loss typically moderates in this phase — not because the programme is less effective, but because the body adapts to the reduced caloric intake over time. This is normal and expected.
The focus shifts progressively from the mechanics of the balloon to the behavioural and dietary habits being built. By this point, most patients are eating consistently smaller, more nutritious meals and have developed a natural awareness of satiety cues that was less developed before the programme.
The coaching component of the programme is particularly important in this phase. Regular check-ins with the Ottawa Health Center team monitor progress, address any challenges, and reinforce the dietary patterns that need to persist after the balloon passes.
Around Week 16: Balloon Deflation and Passage
At approximately the 16-week mark, the balloon deflates automatically through a time-activated valve. The fluid drains into the stomach harmlessly. The deflated balloon shell passes through the digestive system and is excreted naturally within a few days.
Most patients notice a gradual change in the sensation of fullness over one to two days around the time of deflation — a subtle loosening rather than any sharp event. The passage itself is typically unnoticed.
A follow-up appointment at this stage confirms passage, reviews progress, and transitions the programme into the final consolidation phase.
Weeks 17–26: After the Balloon
The two months following balloon passage are often underestimated in their importance.
Without the physical support of the balloon, the habits built during weeks one through sixteen are tested in a more natural way. This is precisely why the programme continues: to provide coaching, accountability, and support during this transition.
Patients who engage fully with the post-balloon coaching phase show significantly better weight maintenance at 12 months than those who treat the balloon as a standalone intervention. The programme does not end when the balloon passes — it enters its most important phase.
What Results Look Like
Clinical data from more than 1,770 patients globally shows average total body weight loss of 10–15% across the Allurion programme. At 12 months after programme completion, 95% of patients who completed the full six-month programme maintain their weight loss.
Individual results vary. Starting weight, dietary adherence, physical activity levels, and engagement with the coaching component all influence outcomes. Your medical team sets personalised, realistic targets at the outset and monitors progress throughout.
